Scott Russellhas been working in the medical device and Nitinol technology fields for over 25 years and brings a rare combination of business and technical experience to the medical device marketplace. His experience includes such diverse areas as medical device design, process development, alloy development, clinical research, business development, graphic design, corporate branding, sales, and marketing.
He began his career at Pratt & Whitney in 1987 developing aerospace alloys with a research focus in the area of high-temperature shape memory alloys. He joined Special Metals in 1993 as a Nitinol Product Engineer. In 1995, he became Director of Sales and Marketing of Shape Memory Applications (SMA), where he grew SMA’s Nitinol business an average of 25% per year, streamlined their raw material supply chain, spearheaded an expansion of SMA’s business into Europe, and supported a large number of medical device companies.
In 2000, he joined Nitinol Devices & Components (NDC), a Johnson & Johnson company. As Director of the Advanced Device Concepts group, he led numerous medical device development and clinical research activities in a variety of fields including cardiology, interventional neuroradiology, orthopedics, minimally-invasive surgery, stroke, drug delivery, pulmonology, and gynecology. He also put together business plans for a number of medical device opportunities. Three start-up companies were successfully spun out based on technologies that incubated in this group.
In 2006 he founded Benchmark Nitinol, a Nitinol medical device technology and business development consulting firm. In 2007, he co-founded and Confirmd, LLC, a medical device testing and characterization business.
Mr. Russell is currently leading a number of startup companies in the cardiovascular space, including serving as President and COO of CardioLogical Solutions (accessory devices for TAVR and other emerging interventional procedures), President and CEO of Emboline, Inc. (aortic embolic protection for TAVR), CEO of SuperRenal (enhanced kidney function), and President and CEO of SeptRx, Inc. (percutaneous repair of patent foramen ovale).
He is a prolific inventor with over 55 issued or pending patents.
